Description
Cheviot Wool 8 oz Combed Top, Cheviot Roving, Spinning Wool by Alba Ranch, AR00018BSF.
Cheviot is one of the main British sheep breeds. Cheviot sheep originated in the Cheviot Hills on the border of England and Scotland. They were referred to as the Border Cheviot and are the foundation stock for the Brecknock and the North Country Cheviots. This hardy breed can withstand harsh environments and are known for being great mothers. Cheviot tweeds are a traditional woven fabric, famous for their crispness and durability, which it popular for suiting material in both men and women fashions.
The wool has a longer growth period of 15-18 months, rather than the usual 10-12 months resulting in a longer staple length. Cheviot has a Helical crimp which has 3 dimensional structures that gives the wool resilience and bounce. The staple length is generally 4-5 inches but this particular combed top is 5.5 inches long.
- 5.5 inch staple length
- 27-33 Micron count (average being about 30)
- Natural Ecru White
- Helical crimp with 3 dimensional structure
- 8 oz Combed Top
- Suitable for spinning and dyeing
I have tried to felt Cheviot in the past and although it will wet felt, I didn’t think that it felted very easily. I would think of this as a wool for a project where you wanted to needle felt or have some stuffing inside a toy that kept some of its shape. I tried to make dryer balls out of it with a darker color fleece wrapped around it. It was a colossal failure. The balls kept unraveling instead of felting. Perhaps it was my felt making capabilities? I generally do not have any difficulties felting my wool projects, regardless if I want to felt them or not!
